CHAIRS
a collective filmplay
Chairs’ is a dark comedy about a Man who experiences Death as a burlesque play performed by invisible Characters, all trapped in an imaginary backstage. Their common goal is freedom, but how they will reach it is to be seen … or heard.
The film seems to be seen through the shifting point of view of the Man and the invisible characters around him, constructing a sense of space where there is none.
Now we see the Man, now we look through his eyes to see Nothing, sometimes some shadows and traces of movement. But this Nothing is actually many things, objects and people that exist in this dark empty space and move around.
The Man’s story unfolds somewhat independent from the story of the Characters. As he reveals it to us, the Characters are trying desperately to make their own imaginary one. The style therefore will be selective for each perspective, trying to point out the difference between a soft cinematic look (for the Man) and a sharper theatrical look (for the Characters). Towards the end the two versions join, as they all understand the truth lies in the life experience of the Man.
Hence, the film will work like a series of 2-way dialogues between the portrait of the Man and the invisible world of the Characters, each with an individual style. As such the Camera will be looking in close-up at the Man and from far at the Characters but with keeping the same distance to both sides, and changing between formats.
I see the film in a rather grotesque style, with fleeting darkness that creeps in and takes over, with light invading and investigating spaces, with moving points of view and changing perspectives.
This strange visual experience creates confusion, both in the mind of the Man and the Viewer. Gradually he looses track of all the voices and doubts their existence all together; as does the spectator.
Through my work, I wanted to create a virtual space in which the magic of both theater and cinema can merge together, allowing the viewer to forge his own realities in the intimacy of darkness.
In a mix of mystery and crude imagined realism, with abrupt intermissions that shake the viewers expectation, and a touch of ambiguity, I hope to tell a story that translates the mood of the Theater, into an entertaining and captivating Film.
